Abstract

Vegetable and regenerated cellulose textiles are improved by treatment in a bath containing an artificial resin, not derived from an organic acid, and one or more soluble compounds of polyvalent metals which give insoluble compounds by hydrolysis or heat dissociation. The resins and the soluble compounds may be applied to the textiles simultaneously or the treatment with the soluble compounds may precede or follow the treatment with the resins. The latter may be formed on the textiles, the soluble compounds often acting as catalysts, and prior to the treatment the textiles may be subjected to swelling media such as mercerising lyes, acids, zinc chloride or copper oxide ammonia. The latter treatment is facilitated by the presence of oxidizing agents such as sodium peroxide, perborates and persulphates. In examples: (1) a mixed cotton viscose fabric is treated first with a bath containing urea and aluminium acetate, free from aluminium sulphate and then with a bath containing formaldehyde and aluminium acetate; the fabric is dried, and excess of the resin removed by means of a soda lye or soap solution; (2) a cotton fabric impregnated with aluminium acetate is treated with a hot solution of a urea-formaldehyde precondensate; (3) a viscose fabric is passed first into a bath containing urea and aluminium acetate, and then into a formaldehyde solution; (4) a viscose fabric is first passed into a bath containing stannous chloride or aluminium acetate and urea and then into a formaldehyde solution; (5) a precondensate is prepared from urea and formaldehyde solution in the presence of ammonia, and aluminium acetate added after acidifying with acetic acid; the resulting bath is used for treating a mixed cotton viscose fabric. Textile materials treated according to the invention resist creasing and staining and at the same time are suitable for making hosiery owing to increased mobility of the stitches and loops. The use of zirconium titanium and zinc salts is mentioned.
