Abstract

516,162. Stiffening textiles. ROTTA, W., [trading as CHEMISCHE FABRIK T. ROTTA], and QUEHL, K. July 26, 1938, No. 22198. Convention date, July 26, 1937. [Class 15 (ii)] Wash-resistant stiffening effects are obtained on textile material consisting of or comprising natural or artificial cellulose fibres by treating them with an aqueous solution of swelling agent, present in concentration insufficient alone to cause swelling, the solution containing an addition of calcium and or magnesium salts, other than thiocyanates, which by themselves cannot produce swelling. The salts used may be chlorides. The treatment is carried out so that no parchmeritizing is effected. The swelling agent may be formic acid, zinc chloride, or calcium thiocyanate. The solution may contain wetting or softening agents such as glycerine or dressing agents such as urea. In an example, regenerated cellulose fabric is treated at 50‹C. with a solution of calcium chloride and calcium thiocyanate. The fabric is centrifuged, rinsed, and dried. A cotton fabric is treated with a warm solution of calcium chloride, zinc chloride, and urea. The fabric is squeezed, rinsed, and dried. In another example, a cloth of cellulose artificial wool is treated with a solution of formic acid and calcium chloride.
