Abstract

Fabrics made wholly or partially of natural cellulose, e.g cotton, regenerated cellulose or cellulose derivative are crease proofed by treating them with acrolein in the presence of a basic catalyst so that the acrolein is polymerized in or on the fabric and then, if desired after rinsing, with one or more polyhydric alcohols, polyfunctional amides or polyfunctional amines, e.g. pentaerythritol, mannitol, ethylene glycol, trimethylene glycol, glycerol, polyvinyl alcohol, urea, monoethyl urea, ethylene urea, polyfunctional acrylamides, dimethylol urea, hydrazine hydrate and hexamethylene diamine, preferably in the form of a solution, dispersion or emulsion, in the presence of an acid catalyst and subsequently, if desired after drying, heating them to effect condensation of the polyhydric alcohol, polyfunctional amide or polyfunctional amine. The fabrics may be impregnated with a solution or dispersion of the basic catalyst, e.g. sodium carbonate, potassium carbonate, triethanolamine or trimethylamine, and then treated with acrolein vapour at a temperature of 20 DEG -60 DEG C. for 1-10 minutes or impregnated or sprayed with an aqueous solution of acrolein at 15 DEG -40 DEG C., for 1-30 minutes. Suitable acid catalysts are oxalic acid, citric acid, zinc chloride, zinc nitrate, magnesium chloride, zinc fluoroborate, magnesium perchlorate and diammonium phosphate. Heating to effect condensation may be carried out at 70 DEG -150 DEG C. for 3-30 minutes. Transparentised fine fabrics obtained by treatment with concentrated sulphuric acid, cuprammonium solution or cellulose sodium zincate solution and fabrics comprising relatively high twisted yarns, e.g. voiles and marquisettes, may be treated.
