Abstract
Cellulosic fabrics are creaseproofed by treating them with an aqueous solution of an aminoplast resin precondensate and/or formaldehyde and heating them to a temperature higher than 100 DEG C. in the presence of (1) a polyhydric alcohol and/or (2) an alkali metal thiocyanate or an alkaline earth metal thiocyanate. Suitable polyhydric alcohols are diethylene glycol, 1-arabitol, isobutylene glycol, ethylene glycol, glycerine and butane diol. The aminoplast resin precondensate may be dimethylolurea, a methylolmelamine, a methylolalkyleneurea, a methyloluron or a methyloltriazone. The aminoplast resin precondensate and/or formaldehyde may be applied with an acidic catalyst, e.g. sulphuric, hydrochloric, phosphoric, formic, acetic, monochloracetic, trichloracetic, dibromoacetic, oxalic or tartaric acid, aluminium chloride or nitrate, ammonium chloride, magnesium chloride or nitrate, zinc nitrate, pyridinium chloride or an alkanolamine hydrochloride. When formaldehyde is used the treating composition preferably contains an aldehyde carrier, e.g. a polyacrylate or cellulose ether. The treating composition may also contain a blueing agent, whitening agent and/or softener, e.g. a polyethylene emulsion. The treating solutions preferably contain 5-40% by weight of thiocyanate, 3-15% by weight of the polyhydric alcohol and more than 3% by weight of the aminoplast resin precondensate or formaldehyde. The amino plast resin precondensate and/or formaldehyde and the polyhydric alcohol and/or thiocyanate may be applied to the fabrics from the same aqueous solutions or separately. After impregnation the fabric may be dried at 50 DEG -100 DEG C. and then heated at a temperature higher than 100 DEG C. if desired in an atmosphere of steam or in hot air containing more than 40% of moisture. Alternatively the fabric may be heat treated by passing it through a mass of molten metal or molten salt. Woven or knitted fabrics containing cotton, hemp, linen, viscose rayon or cuprammonium rayon fibres alone or in admixture with cellulose acetate, polyamide, polyester, polyacrylonitrile, polyolefine, polyvinyl chloride, polyvinylidene chloride or polyvinyl alcohol fibres, may be treated.
