Abstract

A composition suitable for use in the treatment of cellulosic textile materials comprises an aqueous solution containing a catalyst having acid-reacting activity, a buffer for the catalyst and as a resin-forming compound, a dimethylol-1:3-propylene urea, the buffer being present in sufficient quantity to prevent the compound curing at room temperature. Dimethylol-1:3-propylene urea itself, 1:3-dimethylol-5-hydroxy hexahydropyrimidone - 2 or 1:3 - dimethylol - 4:4 - dimethyl - hexahydropyrimidone-2 may be used and the treating solution may also contain dimethylol derivatives of methyl, ethyl, hydroxyethyl, isopropyl or methoxyethyl carbamate, 1:3 dimethylol-4:5-dihydroxyimidazolidone -2, 1:3 - bis (methoxymethyl) - 4:5 - dihydroxy - imidazolidone-2, 1,3 - bis (methoxy methyl) - 4:5 - dimethoxyimidazolidone-2, or a bis (methyoxy methyl) uron, water repellents, softeners, lubricants, e.g. oxidized polyethylene, fluoro-carbon oil repellents, flame retardants and stiffening agents. The catalyst may be magnesium chloride, zinc chloride or nitrate, an amine hydrochloride or ammonium phosphate and the buffer may be sodium acetate, borax, diammonium phosphate, di- or tri-sodium \sHphosphate, trisodium citrate, disodium tartrate, tripotassium phosphate or triethanolamine lactate.ALSO:Cellulosic stock, slubbing, yarn or fabric is impregnated with an aqueous solution containing a catalyst having acid-reacting activity, a buffer for the catalyst and as a resin-forming compound, a dimethylol-1:3-propylene urea, the buffer being present in sufficient quantity to prevent the compound curing at room temperature, excess solution is removed, the impregnated material is dried at a temperature below the curing temperature of the buffered dimethylol-1:3-propylene urea and in the case of stock, slubbing or yarn made up into fabric, and the fabric is pressed to remove unwanted wrinkles or to insert desired pleats, is made up into a garment and pressed or is treated to develop the nap or pile on the fabric, and is subsequently heated to an elevated temperature to cure the resin-forming compound, to produce wrinkle-resistant and shaperetentive fabrics or garments or permanently resilient and lofty pile fabrics respectively. Dimethylol-1:3-propylene urea itself, 1:3-dimethylol-5-hydroxy hexahydropyrimidone - 2 or 1:3 - dimethylol- - 4:4 - dimethyl - hexahydropyrimidone-2 may be use and the treating solution may also contain dimethylol derivatives of methyl, ethyl, hydroxyethyl, isopropyl or methoxyethyl carbamate, 1:3 dimethylol-4:5-dihydroxy - imidazolidone - 2, 1:3 - bis(methoxy-methyl) - 4:5 - dihydroxy - imidazolidone - 2, 1,3 - bis(methoxy methy) - 4:5 - dimethoxy imidazolidone - 2, or a bis(methyoxy methyl) uron, water repellents, softeners, lubricants, e.g. oxidised polyethylene, fluoro-carbon oil repellents, flame retardants and stiffening agents. The catalyst may be magnesium chloride, zinc chloride or nitrate, an amine hydrochloride or ammonium phosphate and the buffer may be sodium acetate, borax, diammonium phosphate, di- or tri-sodium phosphate, trisodium citrate, disodium tartrate, tri-potassium phosphate or triethanolamine lactate. After drying fabric may be subjected to compressive shrinking. Textile materials comprising cotton, rayon or linen, alone or in admixture with wool, silk, nylon, polyester or acrylic fibres may be treated. The process is applicable to the manufacture of shirts and nurses uniforms.
