Abstract

Cellulosic stock, yarn or fabric is impregnated with a solution containing a catalyst and a resin-forming component comprising the product of the reaction of urea, glycol and formaldehyde in the presence or absence of methanol, excess solution is removed, the impregnated material is dried at a temperature below the curing temperature of the resin and in the case of stock or yarn made up into fabric, and the fabric is made up into a garment and pressed, is pleated or is treated to develop the nap, and is subsequently heated to an elevated temperature to cure the resin, to produce ready-to-wear crease resistant garments or permantly pleated fabrics or permanently resilient and lofty napped or pile fabrics respectively. Cotton, viscose rayon, cuprammonium rayon or linen fibres alone or in admixture with nylon or "Terylene", "Orlon" or "Dacron" fibres (Registered Trade Marks) may be treated. The materials treated may be impregnated with an aqueous or alcoholic solution containing 2-20% by weight of the resin-forming component and an acid catalyst, e.g. the hydrochloride of 2-amino-2-methyl-1-propanol, maleic acid, tartaric acid, citric acid, zinc nitrate, magnesium chloride, zinc fluoborate or zinc chloride, by spraying, dipping or padding, and dried at an ambient temperature of 160 DEG -300 DEG F. to a moisture content of 3-15% by weight. Curing may be effected at 275 DEG -375 DEG F. for from 30 seconds to 30 minutes. The treating composition may also contain an emulsified polyethylene softener, a glycerol monostearate softener or an aqueous dispersion comprising paraffin wax and aluminium acetate or zirconium acetate. After drying and prior to curing fabric may be subjected to compressive shrinkage. Example II refers to the manufacture of men's trousers by the process.
