Abstract
Garments of any style, size, design and shape which are press free with sharp imparted creases retained therein after repeated washing are produced by impregnating a fabric, e.g. a fabric comprising cotton and viscose rayon fibres alone or in admixture with polyester fibres, with an aqueous solution of a composition containing a thermosetting compound containing a catalyst possessing the property of maintaining the thermosetting compound in stable equilibrium in the fabric for periods ranging up to one year at temperature below the curing temperature of the compound, the impregnation being controlled to an extent that 85-100% of the compound by weight is retained in the fabric, drying the fabric at a temperature below the setting temperature of the thermosetting compound to an extent that 8-10% by weight of moisture is retained therein, cutting the fabric containing the thermosetting compound in an unset state to the size, shape, style and design of the desired garments, sewing the fabric to provide garment seams, finishing the cut and sewn fabric to completed garments, imparting at least one crease in each of the garments, presetting the garments at the areas of the seams and creases, and finally curing the thermosetting compound to a water-insoluble state. The thermosetting compound may be an imidazolidone prepared by reaching formaldehyde, urea and glyoxal or other aldehyde at an acid pH and having the formula <FORM:1106223/D1-D2/1> in which at least one X is a hydroxy group and R's may be hydrogen and the catalyst may be zinc nitrate or magnesium chloride. The solution is preferably constantly agitated at 120 DEG F-130 DEG F, the fabric dried at 200 DEG -220 DEG F presetting effected at 275 DEG -285 DEG F or 300 DEG -310 DEG F depending upon the type of fabric treated and curing effected at 340 DEG -380 DEG F. If dimethylolated imidazolidone is used and setting effected at 325 DEG -350 DEG F the fabric may also be rendered shrink-resistant. Cotton stretch fabrics, obtained for example by a slack mercerization process, may be treated. The solution may also contain wetting agents and softeners, e.g. polyvinyl alcohol and polyethylene.
