Abstract

Textile materials of cellulose or cellulose derivatives or wool, in the form of fibres, threads, yarns, woven or knitted goods, are rendered water-repellent and resistant to benzine and soap wash by treatment with quaternary ammonium compounds of halogen methyl ethers of the general formulae R.C: (NH).O.CH2.N.Hal., R.CONH.CH2.O.CH2.N.Hal., and R.CHOH.C : (NH).O.CH2.N.Hal., where R is an aliphatic residue of at least 10 carbon atoms and Hal. is a halogen, followed by heating. A diminution in swelling power and increased wet tenacity is also imparted to artificial silk. The textiles are steeped in aqueous solutions of the quaternary compounds containing, if desired, buffer substances, at ordinary or elevated temperatures, wrung out, dried, and heated, e.g. at 90 DEG C. for several hours, at 120 DEG C. for about one hour, or for a shorter time at still higher temperatures. The treatment may be combined with a crease-proofing treatment by adding to the bath formaldehyde with or without urea an artificial resin, e.g. urea-aldehyde, or an initial condensation product, e.g. dimethylol urea; the quaternary compounds avoid any tendency of the bath to gelatinize. In examples, (1) and (3) viscose artificial silk material is impregnated with an aqueous solution of the pyridinium compound of the chlormethyl ether obtained by treating with hydrochloric acid gas a mixture of 1 mol. of stearic acid amide and 2 mols. of trioxymethylene, or of 1 mol. of stearic acid methylolamide and 1 mol. trioxymethylene, dried and heated to 90 DEG C., (2) a plush material consisting of cotton fabric with a viscose pile is treated in a bath containing the corresponding montanic acid derivative together with a urea-formaldehyde condensation product, wrung out, brushed, dried and heated for five minutes at 140 DEG C., (4) viscose artificial silk flock is treated with an aqueous solution of the pyridinium salt of the chlormethylimino ether obtained by treating a mixture of octadecan nitrile and trioxymethylene with dry hydrochloric acid gas, dried and heated to 95 DEG C., (5) a silk velvet having a viscose pile is passed through a bath containing dimethylol urea and the compound of example 4, wrung out, dried and heated for 5 minutes at 140 DEG C., (6) a viscose raincoat material is passed through a bath containing dimethylol urea and the compound of example 3, dried and heated to 95 DEG C. Specification 492,699 is referred to.
