Abstract

Textile fabrics are impregnated with hardenable aminotriazine-aldehyde condensation products if desired in the presence of stiffening or softening agents and hardening the condensation product at temperatures below 100 DEG C. Suitable aminotriazines include melamine, melam, chlormelamine and ammeline. The condensation products are preferably used in acid solution such as in hydrochloric, phosphoric, formic, acetic, lactic or tartaric acid. The condensation may be effected on the fibre by treatment in a bath containing the azine and aldehyde or by treatment in a bath containing the azine after aftertreating with gaseous aldehyde. The effects may be local. Aqueous or alkaline solutions may also be used, the impregnated fibre being subjected to the action of acid. Suitable fibres that may be treated are cellulose, regenerated or esterified cellulose such as cotton, ramie, linen, hemp, sisal, jute, coconut fibre, artificial silk, wool, or silk whether dyed or undyed. Suitable additional materials that may be added to the composition are dressing or fillings agents such as gum arabic, tragacanth, carob bean meal, kaolin, or tallow, softening-agents such as olive oil, castor oil, glycerine, paraffin, quaternary ammonium salts having an aliphatic residue having more than 8 carbon atoms, for example, trimethylammonium sulphate of monostearyl-p-phenylenediamine and water repelling agents such as paraffin, wax, resins, aluminium salts, alkaline earth salts and lime soaps. In examples: (1) bleached and mercerized cotton satin or cotton fabric is impregnated with a solution of a melamineformaldehyde condensate in a formic acid solution to which may be added (4) the trimethylammonium sulphate of monostearyl-p-phenylenediamine, (5) an emulsion of paraffin containing glue as emulsifier, or an aluminium salt, (6) a starch paste, (7) a starch-kaolin paste, or (8) gum arabic, carob bean flour or tragacanth; (9) fabric is impregnated with a formic acid solution of a melam-formaldehyde, chlormelamine - formaldehyde, or ammelineformaldehyde condensation product and potato starch paste. Specification 466,015 is referred to.
