Abstract

Crease-resistant fabric structures are made by joining at least two woven, knitted or non-woven cellulosic fabric segments having a free, unjoined edge and impregnated with a cross-linking agent for the cellulose which will not react with itself upon storage or the application of a temperature of below 100 DEG C. to form the structures and curing the structures while the fabric carries unreacted cross-linking agent sufficient to improve its crease-resistance, e.g. while not less than 30% of the cross-linking agent remains unreacted. The cross-linking agent which may be a "reactent-type" resin, e.g. methylated methylol urea, N-substituted methylol triazones, methylol-N-substituted triazines and methylated and unmethylated methylol ethylene ureas or 1,2-propylene ureas, may be applied to the cellulosic fibres in the form of raw fibre in staple or continuous filament form, tans, yarns, fabrics or regenerated cellulose fibres in the gel state after spinning, as an aqueous solution containing 4-25% by weight of the cross-linking agent and 10-50, by weight based on the cross-linking agent of a latent catalyst, e.g. magnesium chloride, zinc fluoroberate and magnesium perchlorate. The aqueous solution may also contain hand builders, lubricants and water repellants, e.g. polyvinyl alcohol, acrylic polymers, silicones, polyethylene glycol stearate and polyethylene. The treated fibres may then be dried and stored at a temperature below 100 DEG C. The impregnated fabric or fabric made from the impregnated fibres or yarns may then be cut to form the fabric segments which may be joined to form the fabric structures by sewing with a thread or yarn itself impregnated with the unreacted cross-linking agent, by the use of a latex cement or by heat and pressure in the case of fabrics containing cellulose acetate fibres. Garment linings may also be impregnated with the unreacted cross-linking agent. The fabric structures may then be moistened with water by spraying or steaming until their moisture content is raised to 20-100% based on the dry weight of the fabric if desired arranged in creases or pleats, and then cured by heating and pressing at a temperature of 130 DEG -170 DEG C. Textile materials comprising cotton, linen, regenerated cellulose, cellulose acetate, propianate or butyrate or carboxymethyl or carboxyethyl cellulose fibres alone or in admixture with up to 50% by weight of nylon, polyester or acrylic fibres may be treated. Specification 878,655 is referred to.
