Abstract

1,160,676. Grafting cellulosic material. DEERING MILLIKEN RESEARCH CORP. 1 Sept., 1966 [7 Oct., 1965], No. 39032/66. Heading C3G. A cellulosic fabric is impregnated with a compound containing at least one ethylenically unsaturated group and at least one secondary group reactive with hydroxyl groups of cellulose together with a catalyst for the reaction of the secondary groups with the hydroxyl groups, the impregnated fabric is subjected to conditions such as to cause the secondary groups to react with the hydroxyl groups of cellulose and during or after this reaction the fabric is, in the presence of 15 to 85% absorbed water based on the dry weight of fabric, subjected to ionizing irradiation, whereby the compound polymerizes and becomes bonded to the cellulose by a carbon-carbon bond. The said compound containing a secondary group may be formed in situ, e.g. by reacting an aldehyde with an acrylamide in the fabric. A cellulosic modifier, e.g. carboxymethyl cellulose and a textile cross-linking agent such as an amino resin, an acrolein-urea-formaldehyde resin, a cyclic ethylene-urea-formaldehyde resin or a triazone resin may also be incorporated in the impregnating solution. The cellulosic fabric may comprise a mixture of cellulosic fibres with synthetic fibres, e.g. polyester, polyamide, acrylic or polyolefin fibres or with keratin fibres. In the examples, cotton broadcloth is impregnated with an aqueous solution containing N - methylol acrylamide, N,N- dimethylol acrylamide or the reaction product of acrylamide, formaldehyde and ethyl triazone (2 : 4 : 1 molar ratio) and MgCl 2 as catalyst and the impregnated fabric is cured by heating, irradiated and dried.
