Abstract

1,163,525. Treating cellulosic materials. ONTARIO RESEARCH FOUNDATION. 28 June, 1967 [30 March, 1966], No. 14185/66. Heading D1P. Cellulosic textile materials, e.g. fibres, yarns or fabrics of cotton or viscose rayon alone or in admixture with polyester fibres, are creaseproofed and creases or pleats inserted therein are rendered permanent by contacting the textile material with formaldehyde and cyanamide in the presence of water and reacting the formaldehyde and cyanamide at an elevated temperature in the presence as catalyst of an ammonium salt which, is ammonium dihydrogen phosphate, diammonium hydrogen phosphate, triammonium phosphate, diammonium sulphate, diammonium sulphite, ammonium sulphamate or a mixture thereof. The textile material may be impregnated with an aqueous solution containing cyanamide, formaldehyde and the ammonium salt squeezed to a wet pick-up of 60-130% by weight, dried and cured at an elevated temperature or alternatively the textile material may be impregnated with an aqueous solution containing cyanamide and the ammonium salt or with separate solutions containing the cyanamide and ammonium salt, adjusted to a wet pick-up of 60-130% by weight, exposed to vapours of formaldehyde and dried and cured at an elevated temperature. Curing may be effected at temperature of from above 110‹C and up to 180‹C. The impregnating solution may contain 1-10% by weight of cyanamide, 2-5 molar equivalents of formaldehyde for each molar equivalent of cyanamide and 0.5- 5% by weight of the ammonium salt. Instead of formaldehyde, methanol hemiformal, methyl Formcel (Formcel is a registered Trade Mark) or ,paraformaldehyde may be used.
