Abstract
Cellulosic fabrics are impregnated with stiffening - compositions by treatment with soluble condensation products of formaldehyde and ammonium sulphides or ammonium sulphocyanide in the presence of urea, or condensation products of thioaldehydes and urea and polymerization of the absorbed compound by heat. Plastifying agents, wetting agents, colouring materials or fillers may be added. It is stated that effects are also obtained by use of the condensation products of ammonium sulphide or sulphocyanide and formaldehyde without the presence of urea. According to examples: (1) A viscose fabric is impregnated with an aqueous solution containing formaldehyde, urea, ammonium sulphide and ammonium sulphocyanide and the dried fabric passed over rollers heated to 130 DEG C. (2) A fabric is impregnated with an aqueous solution of formaldehyde, urea and ammonium sulphide. (3) A fabric is impregnated in a solution of formaldehyde, urea, ammonium sulphide, sulphonated cetyl alcohol, ammonium sulphocyanide and Diamine sky blue FF. (4) A fabric impregnated according to examples 1 and 2 is passed over smooth rollers heated to 100 DEG C. and then over engraved rollers heated to 150 DEG C. (5) 35 parts of hydrogen sulphide are absorbed in 500 parts of 30 per cent formaldehyde containing 1 per cent calcium carbonate in suspension, part of the formaldehyde being thus converted into thioaldehyde. 200 parts urea, 700 water and 3 oxalic acid are added and the solution filtered. The fabric is then impregnated, dried and the resin polymerized at 130 DEG C. Specifications 258,357, [Class 42 (i)], 278,684, [Class 2 (ii)], 291,473, 291,474, and 304,900, [all in Class 42 (i)], are referred to.
