Abstract

Textiles are finished by impregnating with the aqueous solution of the initial condensation product from which results a synthetic resin, drying, subjecting to mechanical treatment (glazing, embossing, &c.) and then heating the fabric to render the resin insoluble. Stiffening, softening, filling and water proofing agents may be added to the resin solution. The resins employed are those derived from formaldehyde, condensed with phenol or its derivatives and urea and related compounds such as thiourea and dicyandiamide. The added substances may include starch, dextrin, glue, sodium ricinoleate, china clay, paraffin wax. According to examples, synthetic resins for treating textiles are produced by admixture of (1) 100 parts of phenol, 200 parts of 40 per cent formaldehyde, 6 parts of potassium carbonate; (2) 100 parts of urea, 20 parts of sodium acetate, 400 parts of 40 per cent formaldehyde; (3) 100 parts of urea, 300 parts of 40 per cent formaldehyde reacted in slightly alkaline medium, diluted and acidified with 30 parts of 80 per cent acetic acid; (4) 100 parts dicyandiamide, 200 parts of 40 per cent foraldehyde and 420 parts of 5 per cent acetic acid; the solutions being by volume.
