Abstract

Textile materials comprising organic derivatives of cellulose are delustred by first treating with a size comprising a liquid medium containing an alkali metal silicate and the product obtainable by reacting a resinous substance with ammonia, and then forming a substantially insoluble resinate in situ by treating with a halogen salt of an alkaline earth metal, e.g. barium chloride. The size is prepared by mixing the resinous substance, preferably bleached colophony, with sufficient aqueous ammonia to dissolve it, adding ethyl alcohol, allowing to stand, filtering, diluting, and adding the sodium silicate solution just prior to use. The material is treated with the size, and in the case of a fabric is dried in a tenter under low tension and then passed between rollers at 95--115 DEG C. The delustring is effected by treating with a 10 per cent solution of barium chloride.ALSO:A size or finish for textile materials comprising organic derivatives of cellulose comprises a liquid medium containing an alkali metal silicate and the product obtainable by reacting a resinous substance with ammonia. Preferred reagents are a bleached colophony, although synthetic resins may be used, and as the liquid medium ethyl alcohol and water. The treated fabric may be subsequently reacted with a solution of a salt which will form a substantially insoluble resinate, e.g. barium chloride. The resinous substance is preferably mixed with sufficient aqueous ammonia to dissolve it before addition of the sodium silicate. In applying the size to a fabric, the latter is preferably first vacuum extracted, the size applied by immersion or by rollers, dried in a tenter under low tension, and finally between rollers at 95-115 DEG C. In an example, a stock solution is prepared by mixing approximately 1 vol. concentrated ammonium hydroxide, 2 vols. of bleached colophony, 4 vols. of ethyl alcohol, allowing to stand, filtering, and then adding 33 vols. of water; the sodium silicate solution is added just prior to use so as to bring the sodium silicate content to 5 gms./litre.
