Abstract

Hexa - acetato - dihydroxy - carbamidotriferric salts which are useful as tanning agents, are prepared by reacting ferric salts with soluble acetates and urea in aqueous solution and adding alkaline substances before, during or after the reaction. One to three molecules of urea may be introduced into the complex, an excess of the theoretical amount being preferably employed. The reaction is desirably effected in highly concentrated solution at a temperature below 35 DEG C. According to the example, a mixture of sodium acetate, urea and sodium hydroxide in water is slowly stirred into an aqueous solution of ferric chloride, whereupon hexa-acetato-dihydroxy-tricarbamido-triferric chloride is precipitated; it can be crystallized from alcohol. Other alkaline substances, such as sodium carbonate, ammonia and amines, may be used in place of caustic alkali.
