Abstract
Alkylolamines are prepared by treating an aliphatic compound containing a primary or secondary amino radicle attached to a carbonyl group with an oxyalkylating agent and hydrolyzing the N-oxyalkyl product. Aliphatic compounds mentioned are acetamide, diacetamide, ammonium carbamate, ethyl carbamate, urea and alkylureas. The hydrolysis is effected with dilute acid or alkali or by hot water under pressure. The reaction with the oxyalkylating agent, e.g. ethylene oxide or ethylene chlorhydrin, may be carried out at ordinary or increased pressure, preferably using a large excess of the aliphatic amino compound. According to the example, ethylene oxide is passed into an aqueous solution of acetamide and the product heated with sodium hydroxide to give monoethanolamine. Reference is made to the production of the same compound by reacting ammonium carbamate in aqueous solution with ethylene oxide or ethylene chlorhydrin, preferably in the presence of alkali, and then heating the product; also to the production of 1-amino-2 : 3-hydroxypropane using a -monochlorhydrin and acetamide, and to the preparation of monopropanolamine from 1-hydroxy-3-chlorpropane. The Provisional Specification describes the compounds which are treated with oxyalkylating agents as compounds containing the amino radicle, suitably those containing a carbonyl group attached thereto, and including thiourea.
