Abstract

b - Bromo - a - chloro - b - formyl acrylic acid is prepared by reacting furfural with bromine and chlorine at elevated temperature in presence of water. The following reaction-equation is given: <FORM:0695592/IV (b)/1> The compound may be reacted with sodium nitrate to form nitromalonaldehyde which reacts with guanidine to form 2-amino-5-nitro pyrimidine. In examples: (1) a solution of bromine in aqueous hydrobromic acid is heated to 65 DEG C. and part of the furfural slowly added whereafter the remainder of the furfural is added concurrently with a stream of chlorine and a slurry of the desired product results; (2) a mixture of bromine and sulphur dioxide is mixed with water and bromine added to the colourless solution formed and thereupon furfural and chlorine are added as in (1). The bromo-chloro-formyl acrylic acid is stated to be useful in the treatment of black head disease in turkeys.
