Abstract

Trichloracetic acid is prepared by reacting chloral or chloral hydrate with an aqueous solution of nitric acid of from 60 per cent to 85 per cent by weight concentration at a temperature not exceeding 45 DEG C. The nitric acid is preferably used in a concentration of from 70 per cent to 85 per cent and the preferred temperature range is between 15 DEG and 25 DEG C. Preferably 2-3 molecules of nitric acid are used to every molecule of chloral or chloral hydrate. In the examples, chloral hydrate is reacted with nitric acid of (a) 70 per cent concentration and (b) 80 per cent concentration.
