Abstract
In the production of a gas containing a high percentage of nitric oxide and practically no nitrogen dioxide by reducing nitric acid with exclusion of air and oxygen by means of sulphur dioxide or sulphur dioxide containing gas, the nitric acid is reduced in the vapour phase at a temperature below 450 DEG C., e.g. 200 DEG -300 DEG C. at normal pressure, and at least 1.5 mols. of SO2 are used to 1 mol. HNO3. Aqueous, say 33 per cent, HNO3 may be sprayed into the reaction zone and the product gas is washed with water to remove sulphur trioxide.
