Abstract

<PICT:0627848/III/1> Sulphur dioxide is made by reacting pure gaseous sulphur trioxide with sulphur in lump form. According to one embodiment, gaseous sulphur trioxide, produced from oleum at 2, is brought into contact with lump sulphur contained in a tower 1 and maintained at a temperature between 50-100 DEG C. by means of a cooling coil 6, 8 and jacket 9. The resulting sulphur dioxide is washed at 3 with concentrated sulphuric acid. Specification 9579/43, (as open to inspection under Sect. 91), is referred to.
