Abstract

Monothioethylene glycol is made by reacting gaseous ethylene oxide with hydrogen sulphide in the presence of preformed thiodiglycol or monothioethylene glycol as solvent and at temperatures between 30 DEG C. and 60 DEG C. and preferably between 35 DEG C. and 45 DEG C. At least 2 mols. of hydrogen sulphide are used for each mol. of ethylene oxide. The process can be carried out continuously. An example is given.
