1 : 2-Dinitroethane is prepared by reacting ethylene with nitrogen tetroxide at a temperature below the critical temperature of the latter, and preferably at as low a temperature as possible. Atmospheric or increased pressure may be used and the nitrogen tetroxide preferably employed in the liquid phase. Examples are given.
