Abstract

2, 2, 2-Trifluoro-1-bromo-1-chloroethane is prepared by intramolecular rearrangement of 1, 1, 2-trifluoro-1-bromo-2-chloroethane by treatment of the latter with aluminium bromide at a temperature above 0 DEG C. and up to 50 DEG C., preferably at about 50 DEG C. The aluminium bromide may be prepared in situ. In examples, (1) 1, 1, 2-trifluoro-1-bromo-2-chloroethane is added to a mixture of aluminium bromide and some previously prepared 2, 2, 2-trifluoro-1-bromo-1-chloroethane; (2) bromine is added to a boiling mixture of finely divided aluminium and 1, 1, 2-trifluoro-1-bromo-2-chloroethane. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 767,779.
