Abstract

Normal butyl bromide is obtained by contacting, within a previously formed liquid volume comprising normal butyl bromide, butene-2 with gaseous hydrogen bromide and, as initiator, ozonised air, ozonised oxygen, oxygen or a peroxide. A solvent may be used. Temperatures of -20 DEG C. to +150 DEG C. may be used. A stoichio-metric excess of HBr is preferably used. The main product appears to be secondary butyl bromide.
