Abstract
Partially halogenated paraffins are prepared by bringing gaseous chlorine trifluoride into contact with a liquid partially halogented mono-olefine; the CIF3 acts as F2 + ClF, and these groups are added across the double bond in separate molecules of olefine. The preferred molecular proportion of ClF3 is hence approximately one half of the olefine. The ClF3 may be diluted with an inert gas such as nitrogen, at least in the early stages of the reaction. The temperature is preferably raised during the reaction. Examples react sym-dichloroethylene and trichloroethylene with ClF3 to obtain CHClF.CHCl2 and CHClF.CHClF, and CHClF.CCl2F and CHCl2CCl2F respectively.
