Abstract
Ethylene oxide is produced by the oxidation of ethylene with molecular oxygen in the presence of a silver catalyst at a temperature between 150 DEG and 450 DEG C. in a reaction zone in which the surfaces in direct contact with the reaction mixture are of ordinary mild or carbon steel while maintaining a molar ratio of ethylene to free oxygen in the reaction zone of between 1.7 and 3 throughout the course of the oxidation. Suitable diluents, for example, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, steam or argon may be added to the reaction mixture. A catalyst activator, such as a chlorinated hydrocarbon, may be present.
