Abstract

Propylene oxide is produced in a continuous process by the reaction of propylene or propylene-propane mixtures with oxygen at elevated temperature and pressure, the products of oxidation being removed and the unreacted hydrocarbons being recycled after replacing the hydrocarbons used up, wherein the carbon monoxide which is formed as a by-product is removed from the recycled hydrocarbons by ensuring that the oxygen content of the residual gas is such that the carbon monoxide formed can be oxidised to carbon dioxide, conducting this gas mixture at an elevated temperature, which is below the temperature necessary for the oxidation of propylene, e.g. 140 DEG to 190 DEG C., over an oxidation catalyst, e.g. a mixture of manganese oxide and copper oxide, and removing from the gas mixture the carbon dioxide which is formed, p for example by passing the mixture through an absorption tower in counter-current flow to potassium carbonate solution or diethanolamine. Preferably only part of the carbon monoxide is removed in this way, between 1 to 8% by volume remaining in the recycle gas. Specification 643,687 is referred to.
