Abstract

Dialkyl sulphoxides are prepared by oxidizing dialkyl sulphides with a solution of nitrogen dioxide. The solvent is preferably the sulphoxide obtained as reaction product, but other solvents, e.g. chlorinated hydrocarbons, may be used. Excess dialkyl sulphide is preferably used. The nitric oxide formed may be converted in a second vessel into nitrogen dioxide with oxygen or a gas containing oxygen and the dioxide separated from the waste gases by washing, preferably with the sulphoxide product, and recycled to the reactor. The oxidation of nitric oxide is preferably effected in a vessel larger in volume than the reactor. Any excess sulphide is separated from the sulphoxide, e.g. by heating and, if desired, by expelling with a gas stream. Excess oxygen is preferably used for oxidizing the nitric oxide so that the waste gases contain free oxygen, preferably not less than 7 per cent by volume. Nitric acid may be used as the source of nitrogen oxides. An apparatus is described for the continuous production of sulphoxides. Examples describe the oxidation of dimethyl sulphide to dimethyl sulphoxide.
