Abstract

In a modification of the process of the parent Specification for the preparation of dialkyl sulphoxides by the oxidation of dialkyl sulphides with a solution of nitrogen dioxide, the resulting gases are recycled and the dialkyl sulphide vapour entrained with the circulating gases is oxidized by reaction with a solution of nitrogen dioxide in dialkyl sulphoxide to form the corresponding dialkyl sulphoxide, which is removed as such from the gases before they are admixed with a quantity of oxygen or an oxygen-containing gas at least that required to form nitrogen dioxide by oxidation. The dialkyl sulphide contained in the liquid reaction product may be expelled into the recirculating gas by means of an inert gas. Dinitrogen trioxide formed in the treatment of the gases containing dialkyl sulphide and left in the nitrogen dioxide solution may be re-oxidized to nitrogen dioxide with oxygen. The nitrogen dioxide solution may be increased in concentration by using it to wash the waste gases. Oxygen may be fed to the primary reactor.
