Abstract

1,251,925. Gas separation-copper sulphate. NORDDEUTSCHE AFFINERIE. 8 May, 1970 [16 May, 1969], No. 22448/70. Heading C1A. A process for the removal of oxidic sulphur compounds, e.g., sulphur dioxide, from a gas stream comprises passing the gases and, if desired, additional oxygen through an aqueous suspension of copper oxide, or other oxygencontaining compound of divalent copper, or a composition which contains such compounds. The suspension may be used at least until copper sulphate is formed, the copper sulphate solution being replaced by fresh water before the concentration is sufficient for copper sulphate to crystallize. The gases may be passed through the suspension -in two series-connected stages, and the suspension may be moved, either intermittently or continuously, counter-current to the gases through the stages. The gases are preferably supplied in a uniform distribution over the cross-section of a chamber containing the suspension.
