The roaster gas containing not less than 1% by volume of water vapour and obtained by roasting sulphur-containing raw material having a fluorine content of more than 0À001% by weight is passed to a contactor for the oxidation of sulphur dioxide to sulphur trioxide, thus avoiding the poisoning of the catalyst. The roaster gas may have a dust content of not more than 50 mg. per cu. m. (S.T.P.) when it is passed into the contactor.
