Selenium is separated during the production of sulphuric acid by a contact process by washing the contact gas with 93 to 98% H 2 SO 4 at a temperature of 190 to 260‹ C., after oxidizing the sulphur dioxide to sulphur trioxide. The contact gas prior to washing may have a temperature of 200 to 450‹ C.
