Abstract

1363909 Pyridine carboxylic acids BAYER AG 10 Nov 1971 [10 Nov 1970] 52144/71 Heading C2C A pyridine carboxylic acid is produced by reacting an alkyl pyridine with oleum containing at least 60% by weight of sulphur trioxide in the presence of selenium dioxide at a temperature of from 260 to 350‹ C., the amount of oleum being sufficient to supply at least 50% of the hexavalent sulphur required for oxidation in the form of sulphur trioxide. The pyridine carboxylic acid ester may be formed, without isolating the acid from the reaction mixture, by mixing the latter with alcohol and then neutralizing at - 10 to + 10‹ C.
