1358019 #-Mercaptopropionic acid and esters SANKYO ORGANIC CHEMICAL CO Ltd 11 Sept 1972 42041/72 Heading C2C #-Mercaptopropionic acid or an ester thereof is prepared by reacting acrylic acid or an ester thereof with ammonium hydrosulphide, an alkali metal hydrosulphide or an alkaline earth metal hydrosulphide in the presence of carbon disulphide, and acidifying the reaction product. The hydrosulphide is generally in an alcoholic solution. Suitable esters include alkyl, alkoxyalkyl benzyl and phenyl esters.
