Abstract
1301225 Nitro-imidazole derivative STAROGARDZKIE ZAKLADY FARMACEUTYCZNE POLFA 15 Jan 1971 [19 Jan 1970] 2083/71 Heading C2C 1 - (21 - Hydroxyethyl) - 2 - methyl - 5 - nitroimidazole is prepared by reacting the sulphate salt of 2-methyl-5-nitro-imidazole with ethylene oxide in an anhydrous reaction medium including a homogeneous mixture comprising (a) sulphuric acid and (b) a saturated aliphatic compound having a functional group containing at least one oxygen atom or a heterocyclic compound having at least one oxygen atom in the ring, and dosing the reaction mixture with alternately ethylene oxide and sulphuric acid to maintain the reactants and reaction products in solution in the mixture. The aliphatic compound may be an alcohol, ketone, carboxylic acid or carboxylic acid anhydride and the heterocyclic compound may be, for example, dioxan or tetrahydrofuran. The process may be effected at 10‹ to 50‹ C.
