Abstract
In the production of sulphuric acid by the chamber process, which comprises oxidising sulphur dioxide with nitrosyl-sulphuric acid, converting the resulting sulphur trioxide to sulphuric acid with steam, and reoxidising the liberated nitric oxide to nitrogen trioxide, which is re-dissolved in sulphuric acid to form nitrosyl-sulphuric acid, the sulphur dioxide gases employed consist substantially entirely of sulphur dioxide, and the necessary oxygen for the re-oxidation of the nitric oxide is added after the oxidation of the sulphur dioxide with nitrosyl sulphuric acid, for example in the form of air, air enriched with oxygen, or pure oxygen. The process may be coupled with the production of nitric acid by employing ammonia combustion gases to provide the nitrogen oxides in the system. Thus, nitric oxide may be withdrawn after the sulphur dioxide is fully oxidised, and may then be worked up into nitric acid, the amount withdrawn being replaced by ammonia combustion gases.
