Abstract

2-Nitro-4-fluobenzoic and 4-nitro-2-fluobenzoic acids are obtained by oxidising the corresponding nitrofluo-toluenes with aqueous nitric acid at elevated temperature and, if required, elevated pressure. In a modification of the process the nitric acid is wholly or partially replaced by a mixture of nitric oxide and nitrogen peroxide. The nitrofluobenzoic acids may be reduced with iron sulphate and ammonia to the corresponding amino fluobenzoic acids.
