Abstract
Nitric acid of at least 95% is produced by reacting under agitation at pressures 5-20 atmos. acid of at least 87% with liquid nitrogen peroxide and air at 50 DEG -75 DEG C., the NO2 being initially present in at least 30 fold excess, and the amount of air supplied being at least double the stoichiometric amount. If acid of less than 87% is to be concentrated then this acid is contacted at the same pressures with liquid NO2 and air at 20-45 DEG C., the NO2 being initially present in at least 15 fold excess, and the amount of air being at least the stoichiometric amount, until the concentration is 87%, when conditions are adjusted as above for further concentration. If oxygen is used in place of air, the pressure and NO2 excess conditions are the same, but below 87% the temperature is 50 DEG -65 DEG C. and above is 40 DEG -60 DEG C. and the amount of O2 supplied is stoichiometric throughout. In operation, with air, concentration up to 87% may be carried out at 8-12 atmos., 30 DEG C., a liquid NO2:acid wt. ratio of 6-8 to 1, and an air supply of 1 1/2 -2 times in excess of the stoichiometric amount. Concentration above 87% is effected at 8-12 atmos., 60 DEG C.; a liquid NO2:acid wt. ratio of 4 to 1, and an air supply of 2 1/2 -3 times in excess of the stoichiometric amount. Where O2 is used in place of air concentration up to 87% is at 60 DEG C. and concentration above is at 50 DEG C. The process may be carried out continuously in a series of multistage reactor vessels. Specifications 120,378, 131,336 and 321,728 are referred to.
