Abstract

Fluorobenzoic acids are prepared by oxidising fluorotoluenes at elevated temperature and elevated pressure with aqueous nitric acid. Specified temperatures are 125 DEG -250 DEG C. and preferably an excess of nitric acid is used. In a modification of the process the nitric acid is replaced by nitrous gases. In examples o-, m- and p-fluorotoluenes are heated with aqueous nitric acid in a stainless steel autoclave to give the corresponding fluorobenzoic acids.
