Abstract

In a modification of the method for preparing terephthalic acid as claimed in Specification 796,286 p-chloromethyl toluene is oxidised with nitric acid under normal pressure and the intermediate product consisting essentially of toluene acid is further oxidised at increased pressure and elevated temperature within nitric acid, the reaction mixture not being heated to boiling in the normal pressure stage but at the maximum to 100 DEG C.
