Abstract

A process for the manufacture of purified tertiarybutyl benzoic acid comprises oxidizing para-tertiary butyl toluene with nitric acid having an initial strength between 2 and 50 per cent by weight, at a pressure of from 100 to 600 p.s.i. and a temperature of from 50 DEG to 250 DEG C. In the example, para-tertiary-butyl benzoic acid containing a small amount of terephthalic acid is obtained by oxidizing para-tertiary-butyltoluene at elevated pressure and temperature with dilute nitric acid. The starting material may be synthesized from toluene and tertiarybutylchloride or isobutane and the product may be converted to terephthalic acid by oxidation, e.g. with nitric acid.
