Abstract

Isoprene and formaldehyde with small amounts of isobutene are formed from 4,4-dimethylmetadioxane in the vapour phase in the presence of an inert diluent and phosphoric acid supported on rutile. The rutile is preferably fused for 5-20 hours e.g. 10 hours at 1200 DEG C. and then impregnated to give a catalyst containing 1-10% by weight of acid. Space velocities of 0.06-1 litre/hour/litre of catalyst are used. Other details are as described in Specification 874,569. Specification 825,034 also is referred to.ALSO:A catalyst for the conversion of 4,4-dimethylmetadioxane to isoprene comprises phosphoric acid supported on rutile. The rutile is preferably fused for 5-20 hours, e.g. for 10 hours at 1200 DEG C., and then impregnated to give a catalyst containing 1-10% by weight of acid. Regeneration is effected by reimpregnation and/or oxidation. Other details are as described in Specification 874,569. Specification 825,034 also is referred to
