Abstract

Terephthalic acid is prepared by a process which comprises oxidizing para-tertiarybutylbenzoic acid with nitric acid of an initial strength between 2 per cent and 60 per cent by weight at a pressure of from 100 to 600 p.s.i. and a temperature of from 150 DEG to 260 DEG C. The process may be operated batchwise or continuously and oxydation catalysts, e.g. vanadic acid or copper nitrate, may be employed. In examples: Para-tertiarybutylbenzoic acid is heated with 18 per cent nitric acid at 230 DEG C. and 400 p.s.i. whilst further nitric acid of 70 per cent concentration is injected during the reaction to obtain terephthalic acid containing some unchanged para-tertiarybutylbenzoic acid (1); and terephthalic acid is obtained by heating para-tertiarybutylbenzoic acid with 13.5 per cent nitric acid at 240 DEG C. and 500 p.s.i. pressure in the presence of ammonium metavanadate and copper. Para-tertiarybutylbenzoic acid may be obtained by the oxidation of para-tertiarybutyltoluene which may be synthesized from toluene and either tertiarybutyl chloride or isobutene, e.g. by reaction in the presence of ferric chloride.
