Abstract
Aliphatic carboxylic acids are prepared by reacting an aldehyde, e.g. acetaldehyde, proprionaldehyde, or an aldehyde containing 4 or more carbon atoms, with a gas containing free oxygen, at a temperature between 30 DEG C. to 150 DEG C. in a reaction zone in which a compound or compounds of one or more metals of variable valency, and a sequestering agent comprising ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid, tartaric acid, dimethyl glyoxime or triethanolamine are present. The sequestering agent is in an amount sufficient to combine with all the metal, which may be present as a catalyst or contaminant, e.g. cobalt, iron or nickel salt. In an example proprionic acid is prepared by the oxidation of proprionaldehyde with oxygen in the presence of cobalt naphthenate with ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid to give an improved yield.
