Abstract

Aliphatic carboxylic acids are prepared by oxidising an aldehyde with a gas containing free oxygen at an elevated temperature and in the presence of compounds of one or more metals of variable valency, characterized in that phosphoric acid or a phosphate is added initially to the reaction mixture in an amount sufficient to precipitate the compounds as phosphates. The phosphoric acid is added as an aqueous solution or dissolved in propionic acid, and the phosphate as alkali metal o-, m-, or pyrophosphates, and the metals may be initially present as manganese, iron, nickel and cobalt salts. Acetaldehyde, propionaldehyde and aldehydes with 4 or more carbon atoms are oxidised, and the process may be batchwise or continuous and a solvent such as the resulting carboxylic acid may be present.
