Abstract

Para-tolualdehyde is oxidized with oxygen-containing gases in liquid phase, preferably in presence of a catalyst of the cobalt compound type, in solution, to give p-toluic acid and terephthalic acid, and the products may be further oxidized with nitric acid to give higher proportions of the latter acid. Examples describe the liquid phase oxidation to give a high proportion of p-toluic acid, followed by oxidation of the solid product thus obtained with nitric acid to give a high proportion of terephthalic acid, and the liquid phase oxidation of p-tolualdehyde in two stages, the second at higher temperature.
