Abstract

A process for the conversion of an aliphatic para disubstituted benzene to terephthalic acid comprises the steps of oxidation in a monocarboxylic acid solvent by means of molecular oxygen in the presence of bromine and one or more catalytic metals of variable valency, separating the crude terephthalic acid produced in that reaction, concentrating the mother liquors and then oxidising with nitric acid. Reactants specified are para xylene and para di isopropyl benzene in acetic acid in the presence of bromine in association with cobalt and/or manganese, e.g. in the presence of the bromides of these metals.
