Abstract
Terephthalic acid is made by oxidizing p-diisopropyl benzene with oxygen or an oxygen-containing gas in an aqueous alkaline medium in the presence of a catalyst consisting of a compound of a metal having a variable valency. The oxidation may be conducted under pressure and at a temperature of not less than 180 DEG C. in dilute aqueous caustic soda solution in the presence of up to 10 per cent based on the weight of p-diisopropyl benzene of a compound of a metal of variable valency such as titanium, vanadium, chromium, manganese, cobalt or copper or a mixture of such compounds. Manganese dioxide and acetate and potassium permanganate are mentioned. In examples: (1) p-diisopropyl benzene, water, caustic soda and manganese acetate are treated with air at elevated temperature and pressure to give terephthalic acid; other examples illustrate the use of (2) potassium chromate and (3) ammonium vanadate as catalysts. The Provisional Specification is not restricted to the use of an alkaline medium, but relates to the use of aqueous media generally. In an example, p-diisopropyl benzene and water are treated with air in the presence of potassium permanganate at elevated temperature and pressure to give terephthalic acid. Specification 331,100, [Class 2 (iii)], is referred to.
