Abstract
Carbon dioxide and hydrogen are produced by passing a mixture of steam and carbon monoxide preferably at atmospheric pressure and below 400 DEG C. over an iron oxide catalyst which oxide consists mainly of gamma-Fe2O3, or an oxide of a lower oxidation stage of gamma-Fe2O3. The catalyst may be prepared from <FORM:0703441/III/1> which has been precipitated from an equimolecular mixture of a ferric and a ferrous salt. The precipitate is converted to gamma-Fe2O3 by heating to a temperature below 330 DEG C. Alternatively alpha Fe2O3 may be reduced to Fe3O4 and this oxidized below 330 DEG C. to alpha Fe2O3. The addition of chromium oxide retards conversion of gamma to alpha Fe2O3 and chromium containing catalysts may be heated to 480 DEG C. The chromium may be added to the mixture of the iron salts, to be precipitated therewith, or added to the precipitate, preferably as ammonium chromate or bichromate. If desired, potassium bichromate may be added to a ferrous salt solution acidified with sulphuric acid giving a chromium-containing mixture of ferric and ferrous sulphate which is precipitated and heated to below 480 DEG C. The catalyst, which under operating conditions is converted to Fe3O4, may be regenerated by heating in air or oxygen below 330 DEG C.
